Pongal 2022 is a harvest festival which is celebrated in Tamil Nadu for four days. It is the most popular festival and is mainly celebrated in the southern states of India four days to devote a vote of thanks to nature. It is enjoyed in the month of Thai (January – February) during the season when crops like rice, sugarcane, turmeric, etc. are being harvested.

This is a popular festival that occurs on or around January 14th across India. It is also celebrated as a public holiday in Sri Lanka.

The day is known by various names and a variety of different customs are observed in the different Indian states.

Despite these variations, it is a harvest and thanksgiving festival marking the start of spring, the end of the traditional farming season and the gathering of the first food from the harvest.


During the celebrations, cows and their horns are decorated. The festivities also include decorating houses with kolam artworks made with rice-powder along with banana leaves. Prayers are offered in the temple and families come together to exchange gifts, have meals and a gala time together.
